Book Club Menu

I’ve heard from lots of readers asking about a book club menu. Smack Dab is set in my home state of Mississippi, and it only seemed fitting to design a menu around Mississippi products! In my research to find genuine Mississippi recipes and products, I discovered that the Mississippi Department of Agriculture has a website where you can find links to Mississippi producers

A few notes about the menu:

My cousin Elizabeth (also a Mississippian) is an amazing cook and I’ve included several of the recipes that have been passed down in her family for years. I’m not sure who invented them, but they sure are all delicious!

In my (biased) opinion, my mother makes the best fried catfish in the world, and I invite you to watch this video of her making my favorite fried catfish.

Finally, any Mississippi menu needs a great dessert. My favorite Mississippi bakery is Sugarees. All of their cakes are delicious and, in putting together the menu, I couldn’t pick just one. You can find a link to their cakes here. As you may remember, Aunt Belinda was on a quest to make a red velvet cake and Sugarees has a delicious red velvet cake that would pair perfectly with the book club theme. If you’re looking to try something different, the caramel cake is a classic Southern cake and my personal favorite of all the wonderful Sugarees cakes is their coconut caramel cake. Whatever you choose, you can’t go wrong. I hope you enjoy tasting a bit of my Mississippi favorites!
